St. Paul man charged with killing stepfather

Prosecutors have charged a St. Paul man with second-degree murder in the death of his 69-year-old stepfather.

Forty-nine-year-old Dean Joseph Porter had been living with William Shocinski, who was found dead Tuesday. An autopsy determined he'd been dead at least two days and died of head trauma.

The complaint filed Thursday says Shocinski was struck in the head at least 12 times. Police recovered a bloody hammer from his basement.

Porter told police he disliked Shocinski and only lived with him because he had nowhere else to stay. The complaint says Porter did not admit or deny killing him, but said he was willing to accept his fate.

The victim's daughter told police he had kept envelopes full of money around the house, but when she checked after his death, all but one was empty.
