Duluth's new Amsoil Arena opens Thursday with a men's hockey game between the University of Minnesota-Duluth and the University of North Dakota.
Nearly two years in construction, the Amsoil Arena cost just less than $80 million -- including an expanded parking ramp.
A combination of state and local funding will pay for the 6,600 seat arena, which is in downtown Duluth, adjacent to the existing arena, auditorium, and convention center.
Officials say the building is one of the first arenas in the world to be built with LEED certification. It will use waste heat from a nearby steam plant, and features a lot of local construction materials.
