Dayton: Wisconsin's new welcome signs not insulting

Gov. Mark Dayton says he doesn't consider it an insult that Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is touting new road signs that proclaim Wisconsin is open for business.

Walker traveled around Wisconsin today to tout the new signs, which he argues will showcase his state's low taxes.

In a news release, Walker criticized Dayton and Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, also a Democrat, for supporting income tax increases. Dayton said he hopes to work well with Walker and said the citizens of Minnesota and Wisconsin share many common values.

But he admitted he needed editing when asked what Minnesota's welcome sign should say.

"We're a great state for anyone to live in and do business and we've proven that in the past and we'll continue to prove it in the years ahead," he said. "I'll have to narrow that down to a few words. That's always been my problem."

Dayton also said he wants to see Wisconsin pay the full $58 million it owes the state because of the end of a tax deal.

Dayton wrote a letter to Walker last week asking for the full payment. Walker said he wants to negotiate with Dayton on the issue.
