New Mayo Clinic center to study care delivery, costs

The Mayo Clinic announced Tuesday the launch of a new center to study how to deliver the best health care while lowering costs.

Some policy-makers have argued the Mayo system of offering high-value health care can't be duplicated elsewhere. The new Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery will analyze information from its clinics in Rochester, Florida, Arizona and 70 communities in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa.

The center's Director Veronique Roger said researchers and clinicians will evaluate and report on best practices for primary care, prevention and managing chronic diseases.

"We think this is an agenda that's vital for the future of health care in America," Roger said. "The reason we at Mayo Clinic feel so passionate about this is because it resonates with our history, out mission, our values, and what we're all about."

Mayo said it's using internal funds to launch what it called a multi-million dollar effort.
