Empty train cars fall off rail bridge in Duluth
Two empty rail cars fell off a Duluth railroad bridge on Thursday morning.
The cars landed in a brushy area, not far from where the bridge crosses busy Grand Avenue in West Duluth. The cars were part of an empty train that derailed while approaching a limestone storage area next to the "D-M and I-R" ore docks.
Patrick Waldron, a spokesman for Canadian National, the train owner, said the cars derailed next to an approach to the ore dock.
"One of the cars off the bridge is leading against the Duluth dock, which is right next to this bridge structure," Waldron said. "A second car is upside down on the ground. A total of 17 cars were involved in this incident. There were no injuries. The cars are empty so there are no injuries or no environmental issues."
Waldron said crews will be cleaning up the scene through the day, but he didn't know when normal rail traffic could resume.
