Outstanding Minn. principal is from Detroit Lakes

The principal of Rossman Elementary School in Detroit Lakes is Minnesota's National Distinguished Principal this year, and he'll be honored this week by the Minnesota Elementary School Principals' Association.

The association begins its annual state convention on Wednesday in Bloomington. It wraps up on Friday with a speech by Gov. Mark Dayton. Rossman Principal Sanford Nelson will be honored during an awards banquet on Thursday night.

Nelson has been active in the association, including representing it on the State Board of School Administrators for the past eight years. Detroit Lakes Superintendent Doug Froke credited Nelson with leading a high-achieving school and creating an atmosphere in which teachers can take risks.

The national distinguished principal award was created in 1984 to honor outstanding elementary and middle school principals.
