Landmark restaurant closes in East Grand Forks

A legendary restaurant that dates back to the Prohibition era has closed in East Grand Forks.

Whitey's Steak and Seafood had been under new ownership for the past several months. One of the owners, Dave Norman, says that despite efforts to resurrect the restaurant, it became clear it could not be done.

For decades, Whitey's was a unique place for drinks and food. In recent years, new establishments opened across the Red River in downtown Grand Forks, N.D., and traffic at Whitey's began to decline.

The restaurant's former owner, Greg Stennes, leased the building to Norman and other investors. Stennes says hopefully another buyer will step forward. Stennes followed his predecessor, Whitey Larson, into retirement last summer. But, Stennes tells the Grand Forks Herald he doesn't plan to get back into the restaurant business.
