Minn. bill would broaden CPR training for day care

A Minnesota House committee approved a bill Tuesday that would require CPR training for all teachers and assistant teachers in Minnesota's day care centers.

Lawmakers proposed the bill after Hannah Kozitza, 4, died when she choked on a grape at a Mankato day care facility last summer. Hannah's grandfather Ron Edlund said he was surprised to learn that current law requires only one staff person to have CPR training at a day care facility. He wants the law changed.

"Nobody knew that rule. So I took it upon myself and the family to say we've got to do something," Edlund said. "Maybe this law will save somebody's life, and some parents don't have to go through what we have gone through."

Supporters of the bill hope it will become law quickly. No one testified against the bill during the hearing.
