St. Cloud State University is considering joining some other higher-ed institutions in the nation by establishing a residence for students who have gone through drug or alcohol treatment, the St. Cloud Times reports.
The program it's looking at is Augsburg College's 75-student StepUp program, which historically has been able to keep 87 percent of its members sober during college.
A separate residence is necessary, supporters say, because students struggling with addiction find it tough to stay clean when they're living with drinking, boozing or drug-using roommates.
Money to establish the house will be a challenge, but Rabbi Joseph Edelheit, professor and director of religious studies at St. Cloud State told the Times:
“Having a dorm committed to sobriety would be the single biggest statement this campus could make regarding the epidemic of alcoholism on college campuses."
