IRS: 14,000 Minnesotans due unclaimed 2007 refunds

The IRS says it has nearly $13.8 million in unclaimed refunds for 14,000 Minnesotans who have not yet filed their 2007 tax returns.

Taxpayers who qualify must file their 2007 returns by April 18. That's the last day of a three-year window of opportunity to file a return and claim the refund. Returns must be postmarked and mailed by that date.

Taxpayers who file late and are due a refund are not subject to penalties. However, the checks could be held if they have not filed tax returns for 2008 or 2009.

The agency estimates that half of the Minnesota unclaimed refunds are for more than $600. Many are for taxpayers who don't earn enough to be required to file a return but are still due refunds.
