Minnesota man sues Groupon over expiration dates
A Minnesota man is suing the online bargain promoter Groupon, alleging the expiration dates the company places on its discounts are illegal.
The lawsuit filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Minneapolis says federal and state laws prohibit the sale of gift certificates with expiration dates. It alleges Groupon and its retail partners issue the deals knowing many customers won't use them in the allotted time.
The lawsuit filed by Brian Zard of Richfield seeks class-action status. It asks for unspecified damages, including full refunds, and a court order preventing Groupon from issuing discounts with expiration dates.
A message left with Groupon wasn't immediately returned. According to its website, as of January, more than 50 million people subscribed to Groupon, receiving daily deals on everything from restaurants to dance classes.
