Minn. House pays tribute to former chief clerk

Members of the Minnesota House Representatives paid tribute Wednesday to the chamber's former chief clerk, Ed Burdick, who passed away earlier in the day at age 89.

Burdick worked at the State Capitol for 62 years, including 38 years as chief clerk of the House. He retired in 2004.

The House observed a moment of silence at the start of its session. Rep. Mary Murphy, DFL-Hermantown, said Burdick leaves a big legacy.

"The legacy of a Minnesota citizen who loves the building he worked in, but more than anything wanted to do his job the very best way he knew how," Murphy said. "And that was helping us do our job the very best way we know how."

Rep. Greg Davids, R-Preston, praised Burdick as an expert on parliamentary procedure, as well as a teacher, mentor and trusted friend. A bronze bust of Burdick sits just outside the House chambers.
