Group home resident fights with police, shot fired

Police say a 25-year-old resident of a Duluth group home is hospitalized after apparently being shot by an officer he assaulted and tried to disarm.

Duluth police spokesman Jim Hansen says the resident's injury "appears to be consistent with a gunshot wound." The male resident was airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. His condition was not immediately available.

Police were called to the group home Monday afternoon on a report of a staff member being attacked. Police Chief Gordon Ramsay says two responding officers discovered the home was on fire and were met by the resident who attacked them and tried to disarm one officer. He says a shot was fired during the commotion.

Firefighters quickly put out the fire. The Duluth News Tribune says one of the officers was injured and taken to the hospital.
