Dayton sets goals for cutting energy use

Gov. Mark Dayton signed three executive orders Friday that direct state agencies to identify and make energy improvements to government buildings. He is setting a goal of a 20 percent reduction in state energy consumption within five years.

Dayton said the bill could create jobs as construction workers retrofit buildings -- which will save money over the long term.

"In addition to saving taxpayer money by the reduced consumption of energy, this is also a jobs order," he said. "It would create, according to DEED, an estimated 3,000 jobs through the conversion of buildings, and the retrofitting of buildings and the installation of better, sounder uses of energy."

Dayton is encouraging state agencies to find better ways to reduce waste, pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. He also wants the state to use more recycled paper and save on gas.
