Police officer wounded in training accident

A Lino Lakes police officer was accidentally shot in the stomach during a firearms training exercise Thursday afternoon in Coon Rapids.

The officer, whose name has not been released, was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center. As of Friday morning, the officer was in serious condition according to hospital officials.

Coon Rapids Sgt. Tom Hawley said three officers were shooting handguns on the Anoka County Law Enforcement Range when one of the officers was injured.

"To be honest, we don't know if it was a ricochet situation or if it was his gun or one of his coworkers' guns," Hawley said.

Hawley said it's unclear whether the officer was wearing a bulletproof vest, but he said that probably would not have prevented the injury. The injury officer has served with the Lino Lakes Police Department for three years.

The Coon Rapids Police Department is investigating the accident with the assistance of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
