Driver who caused fatal crash faces misdemeanors

A woman who was injured in a crash that took the life of her husband in Dakota County says misdemeanor charges against the driver who caused the collision aren't enough.

Donna May Rollins, 77, of Lakeville was charged Wednesday with careless driving and failing to yield in an October 2010 crash that killed Ricky Ball and injured his wife, Nancy Ball. The Balls were on their motorcycles and about 10 minutes from their Lakeville home when they collided with Rollins' car.

Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom says that under state law, felony charges cannot be brought in a fatal crash unless alcohol or drugs are involved or there's gross negligence. Nancy Ball tells the St. Paul Pioneer Press misdemeanor charges aren't enough. She's undergone 12 surgeries as a result of the crash that killed her husband. Rollins did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.
