Boat that sank on Lake Vermilion likely overloaded

St. Louis County authorities who are investigating a fatal boat accident say the vessel may have been overloaded.

The sheriff's office also said Monday there weren't enough life vests for all seven people aboard.

Authorities say the received a call Sunday about 3 a.m. of a water emergency on Lake Vermilion near the Forest Lane Resort in Greenwood Township.

Two boaters swam to the resort. Four others were rescued by the resort owner and brought to shore. They told deputies they were traveling from the Bayview Resort when the boat suddenly took on water.

The county rescue squad also recovered the body of 29-year-old Casey T. Gilbertson. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The sheriff's office says alcohol may have been a factor.
