Layoff notices for 6,000 MnSCU employees expected to go out today

There's been no word from the state on whether the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system will have access to its tuition revenue and reserve funds during a state shutdown.

That means colleges in the 32 school system will send out layoff notices to 6,000 employees today, more than a third of MnSCU's workforce.

The notices are a warning of sort.  If there is a state government shutdown on July 1st and MnSCU can't get access to its cash in a state account, the workers will be laid off.  Their contracts require 21 days notice before a layoff.

MnSCU's spokesperson Melinda Voss tells me its up to each of the colleges and universites to send out layoff notices to their employees by the end of the day.
