5 teen canoeists rescued near Duluth

Authorities have rescued five teenagers whose canoe trip went awry north of Duluth.

WDIO-TV reports the boys were canoeing along the Lester River near Eagle Lake when they got stuck in a backwater Tuesday afternoon.

The St. Louis County sheriff's office says the group did not have life jackets. The boys had cell phones and called 911. The Gnesen Township Volunteer Fire Department and St. Louis County Rescue Squad responded.

Tim Lacore, who served as incident commander, says the boys were slightly hypothermic. Rescuers walked them out to ambulances to be checked out and then released the boys to their parents.
