Hundreds of friends, family and fellow lawmakers gathered in Brooklyn Park to celebrate the life of state Sen. Linda Scheid.

It was standing room only at the community center Tuesday where the senator was remembered for her commitment to public service. The 68-year-old Scheid died June 15 after she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer six years before.

Her oldest son, Scott Scheid, said his mother's passion for public service started when she went to Africa to serve in the Peace Corps. He says his mother's legacy will be to inspire young women to be anything they want to be.

KARE-TV reports Scheid's good friend, Rep. Debra Hilstrom, says even though Scheid was sick, she rarely missed a session or a meeting.
