Twin Cities union leader to speak at teachers' rally in D.C.
A Twin Cities union leader will speak at a rally of teachers, parents and other community members Saturday in Washington.
Organizers of the "Save Our Schools" march expect between 5,000 and 10,000 people to attend. Among the speakers is the president of the St. Paul teachers' union, Mary Cathryn Ricker, who was asked to speak on behalf of the American Federation of Teachers union by the AFT's president, Randi Weingarten.
Ricker said she and others want to refocus ongoing debates about how best to change education policy.
"One of the fundamental beliefs of teachers &mdash and I would say of parents as well — is that education is really a partnership," Ricker said. "Partnership between parents and teachers has gotten lost in this larger education reform debate."
