President Kaler's Capitol Report interview

Here's a Capitol Report interview with University of Minnesota President Eric Kaler about his big job ahead.

A couple of points:

  • He's "comfortable" with the prospect of the university's law school shedding state funding and raising its own money -- leading to higher tuition "backed up with pretty significant scholarship help." He was more concerned about allowing the Carlson School of Management -- and other divisions which also provide undergraduate education -- because higher tuition might make such schools less accessible to students. The he said he wasn't sure "how the dollars would work" under the system, and that the idea "needs some more thought."

  • The university might be able to offer students some tuition "relief," which suggests that the recent 5 percent increase for instate undergrads might not be that high next spring.
