Police: Mayo HS teen brought gun to campus

ROCHESTER, Minn. (AP) - Police say a teenager who brought a loaded handgun inside a Rochester high school is in custody.

Lt. Casey Moilanen said Wednesday the 17-year-old boy brought the handgun inside Mayo High School Tuesday afternoon when students were picking up their schedules for the school year. Moilanen says the teen attends another high school in Rochester, but has siblings at Mayo.

Police say a parent helper at the school spotted the gun and told a liaison officer who confronted the boy outside the building. Moilanen says the teen reached for the gun and he and the officer struggled, before the boy took off on foot.

Officers arrested the teen in a neighborhood near the school. Moilanen says investigators found the loaded handgun discarded in a backyard playhouse in the neighborhood.
