Duluth schools to add teachers with unexpected $1M

The Duluth school has decided to use some unexpected money to help lower class sizes.

The board voted 5-0 Tuesday night to add the equivalent of 6.6 full-time employees at the cost of $594,000.

The Duluth News Tribune reports the district has about $1 million to work with because of the expectation of more students in the district and from the $50 per pupil increase the state approved in final budget.

The state budget was approved after the July government shutdown. Districts had to pass their budgets by June 30.

Superintendent I.V. Foster says if the need is there, the rest of the money could be spent on more staff adjustments when school opens.

The district expects 100 more students than projected last year when the budget was created.
