Baby's body found floating in Mississippi River

The Winona County sheriff's office is asking for the public's help in solving the mystery of why a baby girl's body was found floating down the MIssissippi River in a plastic bag near Winona.

The body was found on Monday, Chief Deputy Sheriff Ron Ganrude said. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is helping in the investigation.

"The infant is a newborn female weighing approximately 6.5-7 pounds," Ganrude said. "The body was found floating in a bag in the main channel approximately six miles south of Winona."

Authorities don't know the cause of death yet. The body was taken to the Dakota County medical examiner in Hastings for an autopsy.
