Medtronic wins patent infingement suit

Medtronic has won a $101.2 million dollar award in a patent infringement case.

A jury in San Diego found NuVasive had infringed on three Medtronic patents for spine implants for the back, and a plate and screw device for the neck, and a tissue retractor.

In a statement issued Tuesday, President of Medtronic Spinal Doug King said the company is "committed to vigorously defending our intellectual property."

Representatives of NuVasive were not available for comment. Two of the patents -mdash, specifically, for the translateral implant and the cervical plate — were developed by Gary K. Michelson, M.D.

Medtronic's spinal division is based in Memphis, Tenn.
