Dayton appoints Cleary to Minn. Court of Appeals

Gov. Mark Dayton has appointed longtime state district court Judge Edward J. Cleary to serve on the Minnesota Court of Appeals.

Dayton's office announced Tuesday that Cleary will replace Judge Harriet Lansing, who retired earlier this year. Cleary is the current assistant chief judge for the state's Second Judicial District, where he was appointed by Gov. Jesse Ventura in 2002.

Cleary is a St. Paul resident and will fill the Court of Appeals' Fourth Congressional District seat. He practiced law in Minnesota for 20 years concentrating on civil and criminal defense litigation, and was also an assistant public defender for Ramsey County. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1974 and its law school in 1977, and has been an adjunct professor there since 2000.
