Veteran state Rep. Greiling says she won't run again

Long-time DFL lawmaker Mindy Greiling says she'll retire at the end of her current term.

Greiling was once a Republican but switched parties before running for office. After five years on the Roseville school board, Greiling first won a state house seat in 1992.

She's long been a key voice on education matters at the Capitol, having previously chaired the House Education Funding committee.

Greiling sponsored a bill she calls the 'new Minnesota miracle,' which would have overhauled the way schools are funded. She calls writing the bill her biggest accomplishment and failing to pass it her biggest disappointment.

"We were planning to phase it in because it cost a lot, but it seemed to me we gave up doing right by our students when we said 'we can't afford this bill,' " she said.

Greiling, whose son was diagnosed with schizophrenia, plans to focus her retirement on mental health advocacy; she says she's already reached out to NAMI-Minnesota for a possible role with that group after she leaves the Legislature.
