Soldier from Wisconsin killed in Afghanistan

MAYVILLE, Wis. (AP) -- An Army soldier from Wisconsin has died while serving in Afghanistan.

His alma mater, Evangel University, said 1st Lt. David Johnson, of Mayville, was killed in action Wednesday. University spokesman Paul Logsdon says Johnson's family gave the school permission to release news of his death. The U.S. Department of Defense has not confirmed Johnson's death.

The university in Springfield, Mo., says the 24-year-old Johnson was a 2010 graduate and was in command of the Army's 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 2nd Infantry Division. He visited the university last November for a special Veterans Day service.

Campus pastor, John Plake, says Johnson was a well-respected student leader who served as a commander in the school's ROTC program. He is survived by his parents and three siblings.
