Man charged with killing cougar

A southwest Minnesota man has been charged with illegally shooting a cougar in Jackson County in late November.

The Jackson County attorney's office charged Daniel Hamman with shooting a protected animal. Hamman allegedly shot the animal on Nov. 27 as it bolted from a culvert.

If convicted, Hamman could be fined up to $1,000 and serve 90 days in jail. The county attorney's office also says the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has requested court officials to order Hamman to pay restitution to the state for the cougar.

State officials says the male cougar was 1 to 3 years old and weighed about 125 pounds.

Hamman could not be reached for comment.
