Two vehicles crashed through Lake Minnetonka ice this week
The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is reiterating calls for caution on lakes this winter after another car broke through the ice Saturday.
Two men were driving across Smith's Bay on Lake Minnetonka when their pickup truck broke through the ice and sank. Officials say both men escaped through the pickup's windows. They made it to shore unhurt.
A week ago two people in an SUV broke through the ice on nearby Haltstead Bay channel. They also made it safely to shore.
Ice thickness on lakes is uneven due to freezing and thawing over the past several weeks, officials said. Four inches of ice is the recommended minimum thickness for walking and small group activities on ice.
Officials are also asking dog owners to keep their pets on a leash. Officers have responded to incidents where pet owners chased their dogs onto the ice and got stuck.
