Postal Service reshuffles Minn. mail processing

The U.S. Postal Service has announced which mail processing operations it will consolidate as it teeters on the brink of bankruptcy.

The Postal Service said Thursday that in Minnesota, it will move processing from Duluth and Rochester to St. Paul and processing operations in St. Cloud, Mankato and Bemidji to Minneapolis.

The retail operations at the facilities will remain open. The Postal Service said Thursday the moves are the result of a five-month-long study. Specific dates for the consolidations have not been announced, although a moratorium on closures and consolidations ends in mid-May. It's not immediately known how many jobs will be affected.

The Postal Service has previously said 252 processing sites might be closed as mail volume declines. The Postal Service's most recent quarterly loss was $3.3 billion.
