Snow buries Duluth for 2nd time this week

DULUTH, Minn. (AP) -- The Duluth area is digging out from its second blast of heavy snow in a week.

Lake-effect snow dropped on the Duluth area Sunday on top of a foot or more that fell on Saturday, pushing totals as high as 16 inches. And Saturday's snow came on top of nearly a foot of snow from Wednesday.

The Duluth News Tribune reports that east winds off Lake Superior created favorable conditions for lake-effect snow.

In all, Duluth has nearly doubled its snow total for the season in the past week. Going into Sunday, the National Weather Service in Duluth had recorded 23 inches since the previous Sunday, about equal to the seasonal total up to that point. However, Duluth is still about 21 inches short of its average.
