House committee would recognize Cambodian vets

A Minnesota House committee has passed a resolution that would have Congress and the president recognize Cambodian veterans who fought alongside U.S. troops in Vietnam.

Witnesses from veterans' groups testified Monday that the Khmer Freedom Fighters destroyed enemy supplies, rescued American pilots shot down in enemy territory and provided other support. About 30 Khmer Freedom Fighters and their children attended the hearing.

The International Khmer Assembly says recognition would empower Khmer veterans to participate in Memorial Day and other U.S. veterans' services and activities.

The resolution now goes to the House floor. No action has been taken in the Senate.
