Three-alarm fire clouds I-94 in Minneapolis

Minneapolis Fire Department officials are urging caution for drivers on I-94 in Minneapolis because of smoke from a three-alarm fire in an apartment building just off the freeway near the Convention Center.

Crews first arrived on the scene around 2 a.m. and now 45 firefighters are working on the blaze. The fire department's Cherie Penn says that, because the fire is so close to the freeway, drivers need to be careful.

"It's sitting right here up off of 94 and the smoke is going to follow the wind patterns. So we just ask everybody to be safe. And gawking on the freeway at an incident like this is only going to complicate matters for the state patrol which is trying to manage the flow of traffic," Penn said.

Penn says firefighters rescued one resident, but no one living in the building was injured. She says some 30 residents have been driven out by the fire, which fire crews anticipate will continue to burn for some time.
