Metro Transit giving free rides on St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day revelers can ride the Metro Transit for free Saturday evening.

Instead of driving home from celebrations, the public is encouraged to board buses, light rail or Northstar commuter rail. The free rides begin at 6 p.m., and will continue through the last scheduled trip. The last Hiawatha train leaves downtown Minneapolis at 2:13 a.m. Northstar's last trip departs Target Field Station at 7 p.m.

The promotion will be available on routes also operated by the Metropolitan Council and the Minnesota Valley Transit Authority. MillerCoors is paying for the free rides as part of a public safety effort.

"It promotes responsible celebration on St. Patrick's Day, getting people onto buses and trains and gives them an opportunity for safe transportation," said Metro Transit spokesman John Siqveland.
