FBI questions 1993 MN murder conviction
A Duluth man may get a new trial on his 1993 conviction for killing his ex-wife amid revelations that the FBI overstated evidence.
The Duluth News Tribune reports the FBI has notified the St. Louis County attorney's office that one of the bureau's forensic experts overstated the significance of bullet fragment testing during the trial of Marvin Freeman. He's serving a life sentence for shooting his ex-wife, Sherry Kadin in 1993.
Assistant County Attorney Charles Schumacher, who prosecuted the case, says the victim's family has been told of the new development. He says there was a great deal of evidence to support the guilty verdict.
Northeastern Minnesota's chief public defender, Fred Friedman, says the state public defender's office will pursue the matter by filing a motion or an appeal.
