Madison Marathon called off due to heat
This weekend's Madison Marathon is being called off because of heat concerns.
Organizers say weather forecasts for Sunday show conditions will be in the "danger zone" by 10 a.m. and there will be an "extreme danger" by noon. They cancelled the race based on guidelines from the American College of Sports Medicine.
WISC-TV reports the half marathon will be held, and full marathon participants will be entered in that race.
Race director Keith Peterson says that based on numbers from 2010 — when runners were affected by heat — organizers believe only 1 percent of marathoners would be able to complete Sunday's race if held.
Last Sunday, the Cellcom marathon in Green Bay was halted because of heat and humidity. About 20 runners were taken to the hospital.
