Two Minnesota-based health care organizations have won federal innovation grants Friday totaling more than $30 million under the health care law.
Bloomington-based Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement (ICSI) will receive an $18 million grant. The money will fund expansion of a team-based approach to caring for the riskiest and highest-cost patients who suffer from depression plus diabetes or heart disease.
ICSI's President and CEO Sanne Magnan said the grant will allow it to broaden its reach into more states including California and Washington.
"This really is about building a better medical system that sees the whole person," Magnan said. "Medicare is saying we want to begin to lay the foundation for how we could cover this for all people in Medicare and Medicaid."
In addition, Mayo Clinic will receive $16 million to expand its work on reducing treatment errors in intensive care units. Over three years, Mayo will train 1,440 staff in four hospital systems in Minnesota, Massachusetts, New York and Oklahoma.
