A deadline extension has been granted for cities and other public entities to apply for a new business development grant program, says the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development.
Applications are now due July 9. A DEED spokesman said several local governments asked for the extension.
The legislature created the $47.6 million grant program this year in order to take some of the politics out of the funding process for public works projects. A number of projects that didn't make it into this year's bonding bill will compete for the money.
They include proposals to build a minor league baseball stadium in St. Paul, a light rail line in the southwest metro, an overhaul of Nicollet Mall in Minneapolis and a civic center in Mankato. Together, those four projects are asking for more than $80 million — close to twice what is available. More will likely apply now that the deadline has been extended.
