The Minneapolis teenager who pleaded guilty to the shooting death of Trequan Sykes in early June was sentenced to more than 25 years in prison on Tuesday.
Sykes, 16, died on June 1 after he was shot twice in the back by Malcolm Maghundi Jackson, 16, near the 2900 block of Bloomington Avenue in south Minneapolis.
Hennepin County District Court Judge Mark Wernick sentenced Jackson to 306 months in prison. The judge also ordered Jackson to pay restitution to Sykes' family.
Jackson pleaded guilty on June 19. Prosecutors said in a statement that they accepted the plea because of Jackson's age and lack of a prior record.
Jackson apologized to Sykes' family at the sentencing, according to a statement from the Hennepin County Attorney's Office.
