Writer quits over fake Dylan quotes

By HILLEL ITALIE, AP National Writer

NEW YORK (AP) -- A staff writer for The New Yorker resigned and his latest book is on hold after he acknowledged inventing quotes by Bob Dylan.

Jonah Lehrer released a statement Monday through his publisher, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, that said some Dylan quotes that appeared in his book "Imagine" did not exist. He said others were misquotations or combinations of previous quotes.

Houghton Mifflin called Lehrer's actions a "serious misuse." Listings for the e-book edition of "Imagine" will be removed and shipments of the physical book have been stopped.
