State officials are considering whether to investigate the finances of a Minneapolis charter school.
Legislative Auditor Jim Nobles says the Minnesota Department of Education has asked him to look into the financial structure of Harvest Prep and Seed Academy in north Minneapolis.
The school is highly regarded for improving the test scores of students of color, but it is struggling financially.
Nobles says he will meet with state education officials next week to determine if his office should launch an investigation.
"We're at such an early stage here," Nobles says. "I'm not sure exactly the scope we're going to be taking here."
Nobles says Eric Mahmoud, the founder of Harvest Prep, has offered to cooperate with any inquiry into his school's finances.
Mahmoud was unavailable for comment.
