Art Hounds: Gamelan, the vibrator play, and renegade filmmakers

This week's hounds explore a melding of two South Asian music traditions, a play about intimacy, marriage, and the legacy of Victorian sexual mores, plus a film series that gives American avant garde filmmakers their due.

The Twin Cities-based Sumanar Gamelan Ensemble is joining forces with Minnesotan and North Indian vocalist Pooja Goswami Pavan and St. Catherine University Music Professor Allison Adrian predicts it will be an amazing pairing. The concert happens this Friday, Nov. 16 at 7:30pm, at Hamline University's Sundin Music Hall.

The Walker Art Center has amassed an impressive collection of works from some of the most important American avant garde filmmakers of the last century. Local arts writer, critic and curator Mason Riddle went to see The Renegades: American Avant Garde Film, 1960-1973, and found a feast of experimental visual imagery. Through Jan. 6.

Peter Rothstein, founding artistic director of Theatre Latte Da in Minneapolis, had the pleasure of seeing "In the Next Room," aka 'the vibrator play,' when it premiered at New York's Lincoln Center a few years ago. Peter is anxious to see the treatment it gets from Bain Boehlke and a star studded cast at the Jungle Theater. Through December 16.
