Gov. Mark Dayton says Minnesota politicians should be allowed to accept larger campaign contributions.
State law sets strict limits on the amount candidates can raise and spend. But Dayton says it's easy for political donors to get around the caps and avoid transparency.
"Then the money goes to [the] party. Or the money goes to some outside group who's going to make 'independent expenditures,' and then nobody knows where that money is coming from," Dayton said.
Dayton said he doesn't have a specific proposal yet, but he wants the Legislature to look at raising the limits next session — something he said hasn't happened in nearly 20 years.
The Minnesota Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board will discuss the issue on Wednesday, and may also propose raising the limits.
