Record number of entries in cheese contest

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- Which cheese stands alone?

Judges at the U.S. Championship Cheese Contest might have a hard time answering that question this week -- with more than 1,700 cheeses entered in the contest at Lambeau Field. The Green Bay Press-Gazette reports the number of entries sets a new record.

Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association executive director John Umhoefer says the number reflects growth in the variety of cheeses being produced.

The 2011 grand champion was a goat cheese by LaClare Family Farms of Chilton.

Judging is Tuesday and Wednesday morning and is free and open to the public. Entry to the grand champion judging costs $25.

The U.S. championship event was held in Green Bay for years, then was held in Madison and Milwaukee before moving to Lambeau Field in 2009.
