MPR News' Washington reporter, Brett Neely, checks in with developments in the ethics inquiry into the presidential campaign of GOP Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn.

Bachmann is facing questions after a former top aide says she was aware of payments made to an Iowa legislator during her presidential campaign.

In an affidavit, her former chief of staff Andy Parrish says Bachmann approved the payments to Iowa state Sen. Kent Sorenson, who managed her campaign in that state.

Bachmann's lawyers say that she didn't break any rules — that indeed, it may the Iowa senator who is in hot water.

Still, Bachmann is facing other challenges, including speculation about whether she might retire from Congress rather than face another grinding campaign in 2014.
