State gives schools more time for MCAs

The Minnesota Department of Education will give schools more time to complete spring testing.

The deadline for schools to administer Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments, or MCAs, was May 10.

But dozens of districts delayed testing after computer glitches kept thousands of students from completing their MCAs in recent weeks.

Charlene Briner, chief of staff at the state Department of education, says schools will be allowed to continue testing after the May 10 deadline.

"We hesitated to put a week-long extension or a three-day extension because when we are dealing with technology as we've seen it's unpredictable, so we just want to monitor on a day to day basis until all kids have been testing," Briner said.

Briner said once testing is complete, state officials will work with the U.S. Department of Education to determine if the delays have compromised this year's student test data.
