Federal move could threaten Medicare funding for rural hospitals

Scores of small, rural hospitals in Minnesota receive extra Medicare funds on the theory that the loss of those hospitals would cause unreasonable suffering among rural patients. A recent federal recommendation, however, calls for a reevaluation of the hospitals, a move that could lead to their elimination from the program. The development could affect 90 percent of Minnesota's rural hospitals.
