The leading candidates for Minneapolis mayor take their campaigns to the Minnesota State Fair on Saturday for the first of two debates there.
Saturday's debate, starting at 2 p.m., is sponsored by the University of Minnesota. Eight candidates will face off outside the U of M building, two blocks west of Gate 5 on Dan Patch Avenue.
Political scientist Larry Jacobs invited candidates Mark Andrew, Jackie Cherryhomes, Dan Cohen, Bob Fine, Betsy Hodges, Don Samuels, Cam Winton and Stephanie Woodruff to participate in the forum.
The same eight candidates meet again on Monday at the Minnesota Public Radio Booth at the corner of Judson and Nelson, for a live noon-hour forum hosted by Gary Eichten.
The impending retirement of Mayor R.T. Rybak has sparked off the hottest mayor's race the city has seen in a generation: 35 candidates will appear on the ballot. The eight invited to the debates are waging the most active campaigns.
